I was trying to keep up with him, his long, skinny Bambi legs galloping ahead of me, up a steep road in St. Barts, one holiday years ago. We were both trailing a much fitter gaggle of New Yorkers, whom I had foolheartedly agreed to go on a hike with. That morning in St. Barts captured what I loved most about Harry. He made me howl with laughter while we were drenched in sweat, far behind everyone else, and totally unprepared for the activity. I don’t even remember if we were wearing sneakers. I feel so very fortunate to have many more such memories of Harry who was playful, curious, sharp-witted, and had a great sense of humor. Outside in the sunshine, snorkeling together in the ocean, on a hayride in Missouri, or just wandering the bustling streets of Paris, his company made me happy. Our mutual love for Galliano’s Dior and Edie Sedgwick’s eternal glamour; we had so much common ground. There was an agelessness to Harry’s beautiful mind, eternally swirling in the brightest of hues.

Looking back over old pictures, we seem to have met at my Vogue welcome party, celebrating my new position and big move to New York. It was love at first sight. His perfect manners, glowing spirit, and distinctive look were usually amped up by his fabulous partner-in-crime, his older brother, Peter. Together they conquered the scene with youthful ease and ageless glamour.
