White Elk, who is Oglala Lakota, is a newcomer to the modeling world. They only entered the industry this summer, after being discovered by IMG Models. The Vogue Italia cover happened after the Vintage Born In February 1945 Living Legend shirt, hoodie and sweater came across Denali’s photos on IMG’s social channels. “It was a dream come true, to be honest,” says White Elk of the opportunity (they were photographed for the cover this summer in New York City). “[Looking back], I feel like I should have been even more excited, because it’s such a monumental thing to have accomplished. I didn’t know what to expect, but I enjoyed it, because everything [about the cover project] was based with a purpose.”
Going forward, they now hope to use modeling as a way to educate others about their culture and raise awareness about key issues affecting Indigenous people—all doing so through fashion, which can provide a more visual opportunity to showcase what the modern-day Indigenous community looks like today, while simultaneously defying stereotypes around it. “I hope to work with other Native models and Native fashion brands,” White Elk says for future plans. “There’s a misconception that we’re all supposed to look the Vintage Born In February 1945 Living Legend shirt, hoodie and sweater . Not everyone's culture is similar, because everyone's tribe is very specific to that area. I want to inspire other natives, and especially the youth, to follow their dreams, continue to be resilient, and keep their hope.”
