Another notable win came with the election of Stephanie Byers to the Kansas House of Representatives, becoming the first trans Indigenous person to hold statewide office. As Danica Roem, who made history three years ago as the first openly trans person to serve in any U.S. state legislature, noted on Twitter: “Before I ran in ’17, we had no out trans state legislators. In ’21, we’ll have seven.”

Elsewhere, there were a number of firsts for queer people of color.
